My 87 Cent Uber Ride

April 6, 2016

Yes, it is possible to get an Uber ride for almost free, as I found out last week when I attended the Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop in beautiful, cosmopolitan Dayton, OH and it’s so easy to get, it’s not even funny. It may be a one-time deal, but it’s good in any town with Uber, not just Seattle.

First, a bit of background. As I mentioned, I attended a conference in Dayton last week and wasn’t sure how I was going to get from the airport to my hotel. There were no shuttles and the cabs weren’t exactly cheap. Shuttle services started around $38, if you reserved a day in advance and lord knows what a taxi would have cost if I had just hailed one when I got there. I had heard that Uber was around $16-$22, so I downloaded the free App before I left.

So far, so good.

Then, I heard about the discount code. All I had to do was enter FIRSTRIDE18 when I booked the ride and it meant that I would get $18 off my first ride. I’m so glad it was that easy because, quite frankly, I needed the ride after getting off a red-eye flight from Seattle and I wasn’t in the mood for anything complicated. The driver arrived in less than 10 minutes and I was at my hotel in less than an hour.

As it turns out, the ride would have cost $18.87, but since I had the discount code, it only cost 87 cents.

Not too shabby.

There’s another way for both of us to get a free ride, by the way. If you sign up for Uber using my invite code — davidv8113ue — and then book an Uber ride, you’ll get a ride worth up to $20 free and I will, too.

Is this a great country or what?

Fill Your Favorite Big-ass Cup With Slurpee Today (3/18-19)

March 18, 2016

The pause that refreshes. Here’s my Slurpee in a Sodastream bottle.

Yep, you saw that right, today and/or tomorrow (3/18-19), you can take your favorite monster container into a participating 7-11 and fill it with your favorite Slurpee flavor for the price of $1.50 because it’s BRING YOUR OWN CUP DAY! Sure, it’s not free, but that’s still a pretty good deal, as long as you can find a big enough cup.

There are some limitations, though and here they are:

  1. The cup must fit upright through a 10 inch hole.
  2. The cup must be food safe
  3. It must be watertight and not leak
  4. One cup per person.

I wonder if my hiking water bottle will fit through. If so, I am so there.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days.

I’m just counting down the minutes even as we speak.

Ivar’s BOGO Next Week: Buy 1, Get One for $1.11

March 8, 2016

The late, great huckster/restaurateur Ivar Haglund is celebrating his 111th birthday next Tuesday (March 15th) with a great deal at all of his restaurants. Buy one meal at regular price, get a second meal off a special menu for just $1.11.

After all, why  let something like being dead get in the way of a good birthday party?

The deal is good at Ivar’s Seafood Bar, Ivar’s Acres of Clams, Ivar’s Salmon House or Ivar’s Mukilteo Landing. In addition, the first 111 guests at each location will receive a FREE birthday Strawberry-Guava Cheesecake.

The publicity material says you need to say “Happy Birthday, Ivar” to get the deal, but my experience has been that you don’t even have to ask. Just Keep Clam!

Free Pancakes @IHOP Today (3/8)

March 8, 2016

npd2016_pancakesIt’s National Pancake Day today (3/8) and participating IHOP locations are celebrating by offering a free short stacks of pancakes to anyone who passes through their doors today until 7 p.m.

There’s no purchase necessary for the buttermilk pancakes, but IHOP is asking that you consider making a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals or some other charity chosen by the individual restaurant.

This reminds me. I once knew a man who said he ate 100 IHOP pancakes in a single sitting.

How Waffle.

Thanks to ThriftyNWMom.

Starbucks: Half Price Fraps after 2 today (3/7)

March 7, 2016

I’m not sure why Starbucks has decided to offer half price fraps after 2 p.m. today only (3/7). Nor do I care. I’m just going to be there shortly after 2:01.

There’s just one catch, according to ThriftyNWMom. You can only purchase said beverages with the Starbucks app or a registered Starbucks card.

Free Prom Dresses at Meadowbrook Saturday

February 26, 2016

fglogopinkThe Fairy Godmother Project will help high school-aged girls in need find the perfect prom dress from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Meadowbrook Community Center, 10517 NE 113th St. in Seattle.

I admit, I’m not into this stuff, but if I were a girl I might think it’s pretty cool because it sounds like the stuff of fairy tales. There will be at least 200 dresses and 100 pairs of shoes on hand and every girl who shows up will get her own fairy godmother who will work with her to create the perfect prom look. Best of all, it’s totally free. No means testing and no questions asked.
