Shop Small, Save Big On Small Biz Saturday Today

November 28, 2014

imgresIn case you haven’t heard, today (11/29) is American Express’ Small Business Saturday, an event designed to encourage people to skip the mega-blockbuster sales at the mega-blockbuster chain stores and visit the true heroes of American enterprise, the country’s small, independent businesses.

While the Cheap Bastard might argue with some of the stores that American Express chooses to consider small businesses, he doesn’t have any quibbles with the savings you can get. If you are an American Express cardholder and you enroll your card on the AMEX web site before you go shopping on Saturday and then you shop at one of the small businesses participating in the event, you get a $10 credit for spending at least $10 at that small business. So, if you go to a place like Chocolopolis on Queen Anne and spend $12 on truffles, you’ll only be paying $2 after you receive the credit (which could take up to 90 days).

And the best part is, you can take advantage of that deal at three different locations. So, you could go to Fran’s Chocolates and buy a bunch of Salt Caramels, purchase some gag gifts at Archie McPhee’s and then stop in at Wide World Travel Store in Wallingford around 2 p.m., say hello to the Cheap Bastard and get a copy of the Cheap Bastard’s Guide to Seattle for around $7 (before sales tax). That sure beat’s paying $16.95 and I’d be happy to sign it for you.
