Nancy Pearl’s Secret: Seattle’s Best Little Free Library

November 11, 2014

ShhhhOkay, the Cheap Bastard admits it. He’s been holding out on you. He’s long known a secret about one of the city’s little free libraries that he’s been keeping close to his vest for quite some time now, but he’s decided to let the cat out of the bag now that he has Nancy Pearl’s approval.

As it turns out, the city’s favorite librarian and author of “Book Lust” doesn’t just record her podcast “That Stack of Books” at the Bryant Corner Cafe. There are also times when she leaves behind advance copies of books that are due to hit the stands in the coming months. It’s not a regular thing, mind you. Sometimes the shelves are flush with books, other times they aren’t.

Another important thing to remember is that if you take a book, you should leave one in its place.

I feel obligated to point out that her putting it on the shelf is not the same as an endorsement of a particular book. In fact, it could well be the opposite. She told me she gets so many that she usually doesn’t read the books that make their way to the Bryant Corner Cafe’s shelves, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t good. In fact, I’ve picked up a couple that turned out to be quite good.

I’ve also come across a few that were real clunkers. But it’s a small price to pay for an advance copy of a book that just might make a big splash in a few months.

As I’ve mentioned often, it’s just one of the many reasons to visit the Bryant Corner Cafe. There’s the kids eat free special on Mondays, half priced cookies on Tuesdays, $2 lattes on Wednesdays, half price pastries on Thursdays and half price homemade bread on Fridays.

No, the Bryant Corner Cafe hasn’t paid me to say these things. I just like the place and the people who run it.

The Cafe is located at 3118 NE 65th Street in Seattle.

And Nancy Pearl will be recording another edition of “That Stack of Books” this morning at 10.
