Outdoor Movie Season Begins Today

July 1, 2014

Yep, it’s that time of year. The weather is getting nice (mostly) and our thoughts turn to doing something a little different…like setting up an urban camp site in the middle of a parking lot and watching a second run movie with hundreds of our closest friends until it gets cold and uncomfortable and we realize it’s time for us to be heading on home.

If the movie’s a good one, that feeling won’t usually won’t hit until there are about 10 or 15 minutes left, but if it’s really bad, well….

On the plus side, admission is usually free or cheap, many have movie-related activities or live music before and it’s a heck of a good time.

The season starts tonight with the showing of Despicable Me 2 at the Bellevue Summer Outdoor Movies at Bellevue Downtown Park where the movies start at dusk and there’s usually a film-themed activity before the picture starts. There will be a Tuesday night movie at the park in Bellevue now through Aug. 19th. Admission is free.

Truth be told, it isn’t really the first outdoor movie of the summer. The LeMay Car Museum actually started it by showing “Cars” on June 21 as part of its monthly Drive-In Movie series, but it only does a movie once a month. The Tacoma attraction will show “Smokey and The Bandit” on July 26th and “American Graffiti” on Aug. 26 (I’m beginning to detect a theme here). Admission is free, but does not include admission to the museum.
