BEST. READING. EVER.

As an author trying to sell a book, I always thought that a lot of people had to attend one of my readings to make it a highly successful event. Last night at Ravenna Third Place Books I learned otherwise. Although I had the smallest crowd I’ve ever had at a reading, I also had the most fun.

That’s not to say that I haven’t enjoyed all the other readings that I’ve done. It’s just that I loved the give and take and the good-natured heckling that occurred with the small gathering. Ideally, I would love to have that type of exchange at all of my readings, no matter what the size. I will admit we strayed from the subject occasionally covering everything from used book buying to a short discussion of the movies “The Blues Brothers” and “My Favorite Year.”

For those of you who attended and those who wished they could have, here are the deals I mentioned last night:

GOLDEN BEETLE’S THREE DAY HAPPY HOUR — In celebration of its third anniversary in Ballard, the Golden Beetle has been holding a three-day-long happy hour that started on Monday and continues through today. Happy hour prices on food and drinks are available from 4:30 to 10 p.m. Food prices range from $3 to $8 including the item that amuses me most: spiced fries fried in beef fat. It’s also available in a vegetarian option. Say what? (Thanks Seattle Met’s Nosh Pit blog.)

EL BORRACHO’S DOLLAR TACOS — When El Borracho Taqueria y Cantina opens this Friday, it will have a $1 taco happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. daily. The new restaurant is going in where the Field House used to be at 5465 Leary Ave NW. (Thanks Myballard.com)

BOLLYROBICS — It’s an exercise class. It’s a celebration of dance and Bollywood musicals. It’s two, two, two things in one. And it will be free at the Redmond Library from 7 to 9 p.m. this Thursday. (Thanks Freeattle)

RED ROBIN — Thanks to the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl victory, the Tuesday free double tavern burger deal (with purchase of full size burger and two drinks) continues through the end of this month.

PORGY AND BESS’ ROOM WITH A VIEW — The 5th Avenue Theatre plans another free community spotlight event where folks can get a free sneak preview of two upcoming shows, “Room With a View” and “Porgy and Bess” on Tuesday, March 18th. The event will feature a glimpse into each show and several fun lectures including one by Rick Steves on the Magic of Florence, Italy. How cool is that?

YOU’VE GOT SOME NERF — The Cheap Bastard hasn’t written much about house parties, but he just found a cool one that he had to mention. Companies that want to get their products into the hands of a lot of people at the same time often look for folks to host house parties to introduce their friends to new products. The maker sends free stuff and the host shares it with a crowd. It’s not just for Tupperware any more. Right now Nerf is looking for folks to host a March 29th Nerf Rebelle Training Day House Party where folks will get a chance to try out the company’s line of bows and blasters. Sounds like a blast! (Thanks Thrifty and Thriving).
