One of the big problems with taking advantage of freebies and give-aways is that it’s not only hard to remember them, it can also be hard to get to the place.

You know how it is. You’re rushing about like crazy, you’ve got to rush to work, leave work quickly to pick up the kids from school, fix dinner and by the time you remember that you wanted to get free ice cream or whatever, you’re too tired to go back out and get out.

When you’ve got lots of free time thanks to the government shut-down, however, it’s easy to take advantage of the offers. After all, what else are you going to do? Heck, you probably even have time to read a longer posting.

The reason the CB mentions all this is that the Queen Anne Cupcake Royale is having a grand opening that includes several freebies. Stop by between 7 and 10 a.m. and you can try FREE SAMPLES of the bakery’s NEW PASTRIES including muffins, banana bread and cookies. Visit again between 3 and 7 p.m. and you can get a FREE BABY SCOOP of Cupcake Royale’s ice cream.

While we’re at it, did we mention the free chocolate tonight at Chocolopolis? Page down for more details.

And here are some other freebies available throughout the day:

MORE OPERA, MORE FAT LADIES, MORE SINGING — Another free lecture about the Seattle Opera’s production of “The Daughter of the Regiment” from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Greenlake branch of the Seattle Public Library.

IT’S ABOUT TIME FOR A READING — “It’s About Time Reading Series” holds its 288th meeting from 6 to 7:45 p.m. at the Ballard branch of the Seattle Public Library. The event features author readings and open mic.

LEARN HOW TO TAKE A HIKE — The Mountaineers hosts a beginning hiking seminar starting at 6:30 p.m. The event will review what to bring on a day hike, gear, how to dress and more. The session is free, but RSVP is requested. Class subject to cancellation if at least 15 people haven’t registered by the day before the class.

THE YARN WHISPERER — Sometimes the titles are so strange they don’t merit additional humor. Clara Parks discusses her book “The Yarn Whisperer: My Unexpected Life in Knitting” at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park at 7 p.m.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT — The Auburn Branch of King County Library hosts an event called “Evaluating Diets: What Science Says About Trendy Diets Like Paleo, Wheat Belly and Gluten Free” at 7 p.m. The information does not say if someone will in attendance will actually have wheat growing out of their belly.

AN EVENING WITH JHUMPA LAHIRI — Okay, it’s not really the whole evening. It’s just an hour and a half, but the Seattle Public Library is hosting a conversation better UW Associate English Professor Chandan Reddy and Jhumpa Lahiri, the author of “The Lowland” which may be a potential Man Booker Prize winner.

STRESS? STRESS? THE GOVERNMENT’S SHUT DOWN, I DON’T KNOW WHERE MY NEXT PAYCHECK IS COMING FROM AND CRAZY PEOPLE ARE RUNNING THE COUNTRY AND YOU WANT ME TO DESTRESS THROUGH MEDITATION? WHAT THE HECK, IT’S WORTH A SHOT — That is as long as you don’t mind driving to the Lynnwood Library to attend a discussion on how meditation helps reduce stress-related issues. It’s tonight at 7 p.m.

When all else fails, there’s always FREE CHOCOLATE this Thursday and every Thursday at the free Chocolate Happy Hour from 5 to 9 tonight and every Thursday night at Chocolopolis on Queen Anne.
