Round-Up of Shutdown Deals and (Other Stuff)

October 7, 2013

coastal-kitchen-logoNow that the government shutdown has gone into its second week with no end in sight, it’s worth taking a look at deals available for furloughed government workers…and things you can do in all that extra spare time without spending a lot of money.

FREE COSTCO MEMBERSHIP–The good news behind the shutdown is that you have more time to shop for the stuff you need at a good price. The bad news for military folk is that Post Exchanges and Commissaries are shut for the duration. Participating Costco stores are stepping in and offering free memberships to military families, according to a posting on the Joint Base Lewis McChord Facebook page. Just remember to bring your military ID with you. Also, you may want to call before you go just to make sure your local Costco is honoring the deal. (Thanks Queen Bee Coupons.

SAMS CLUB–Costco isn’t the only member club to offer the benefit. Participating Sam’s Clubs are offering free shopping passes to military personnel and families until commissaries reopen.

Once you’re done shopping, what else can you do with all that spare time? Well, Freeattle has a few free suggestions for today including:

FREE YOGA–Although the folks at Eight Limbs told the CB that they were no longer offering free yoga when he was doing research for the new edition of his book, Freeattle says that Eight Limbs West Seattle is offering a free yoga class from 4:30 to 5:30 today.

CHAT WITH A LIBRARIAN — If you’re stuck at home all alone with no one to talk to, you can always go to the Ballard Branch of the Seattle Public Library and talk with City Librarian Marcellus Turner who will be sharing updates about levy implementation and other future plans from 5:30 to 6:30 tonight.

HAVE A GLASS OF WINE–Wine World & Spirits offers wine tastings almost every day from 6 to 8 p.m. and the place is really easy to reach. It’s just off the I-5 at NE 45th…but that doesn’t mean you should drink and drive.

HEAR ABOUT THE FAT LADY SINGING–We all know that like opera, the government shutdown won’t be over until the fat lady sings, but if you want to find out more about what it sounds like to hear the fat lady and other people sing loudly, you can attend a preview lecture about Seattle Opera’s new production “The Daughter of the Regiment” at the West Seattle Branch of the Seattle Public Library at 6:30 p.m. or at the Redmond Library starting at 7. What I want to know is, how the hell is the lecturer going to get from downtown Seattle to Redmond in less than half an hour?….

CHANGE YOUR DIET–The Kirkland branch of the King County Library will have a lecture titled “Evaluating Diets: What Science Says about Trendy Diets Like Paleo, Wheat Belly and Gluten Free.” The lecture starts at 7 p.m.

GET JAZZED — Take in the music of the Pork Chop Trio at Coastal Kitchen from 9:30 to midnight tonight. Oh and if it helps, the drink happy hour begins at 9 and the late night happy hour menu is available starting at 10 p.m.
