Cheap Bastard Meetup Report

January 24, 2013

cheapbastardcoverFor those of you who have been wondering, the first Cheap Bastard meetup was small, but mighty. It may have been an intimate group, but they had some big ideas on where they go to get deals and what they’d like to see on the cheap bastard blog. And then the CB shared a bit of where he gets his bargains from.

There’s not enough time and space to go into all the details here, but the CB would like to share some of the highlights.

First, some of the CB’s favorite deals:

Cook With PCC, Get Free Classes–If you volunteer as a cook’s assistant during a cooking class at one of the area’s PCCs (Puget Consumer’s Coop) you not only get a free class, but also get other benefits. It does involve a bit of work, though, including arriving early to set up and staying late to clean up, but you’ll also get to attend the class you help set up. You can also download an application from that page.

Get Someone to Pick Your Fruit For You–If you own a fruit tree that gives you way too much fruit, you can the folks at Seattle Tilth who will not only pick the fruit for you and donate it to a local food bank, but they’ll also leave behind as much as you want for your own personal use.

After this deal was mentioned, there was much discussion of Puget Sound programs where you can go volunteer to pick on a farm and get a little bit of fruit for your efforts and even free grape stomping at some area wineries. The CB is looking into this and hopes to post more information about that in the near future.

Get Happy at Girardi’s in Edmonds–One of the attendees mentioned that Girardi’s Osteria in Edmonds has a great happy hour. The CB looked at the happy hour menu online and was impressed with how extensive it is. Most places have only a few items available during happy hour. Girardi’s has 24 items, most under $7 and that doesn’t include the desserts for $3.50. It also has great hours–3 to 6 pm and 8 to close Monday through Saturday, noon to 6 and 8 to close on Sunday.

Valentine’s Day at the Dining Dog–While this isn’t a deal, it amused the CB. Apparently, there’s a restaurant for dogs in Edmonds that’s only open by appointment, but it does have a Valentine’s Day dinner that features an Elvis impersonator. Love it.

What Attendees Want to See

Although there was lots of love for what the CB does, folks said they’d love to hear about more of the following–

*Free lectures at the University of Washington

*Free classes offered by area hospitals

*Ways to cut grocery bills

*How to get free advance preview passes to new movies

*How to get into plays for free–apparently, one attendee has heard that there’s some way to see plays for free when ticket sales are light, she just hasn’t been able to find out who to ask or where to go. If any reader knows more about this, please let the CB know.

As mentioned, the CB also shared where he gets his deals from because he doesn’t always have time to list all of them and because some folks may have a differ with the CB on what’s a good deal and what isn’t. This is just a partial list, but it includes some of his favorite blogs.

First, the CB starts off by visiting Cloud 9 Couponing to find out which of his favorite blogs have updated, then he visits the following blogs:

The Coupon Project.

Hip 2 Save, one his favorite national bargain blogs.

The Krazy Coupon Lady, another fun blog with great national deals.

Queen Bee Coupons, another of my top NW blogs.

Coupon Connections.

Thrifty NW Mom, one of my favorite NW-based bargain blogs.

The CB will list more links as time permits when his son isn’t about to get off a school bus at any minute.

So, what about you? What would you like to see? What are the deals that you’re hearing about? Please feel free to leave a comment or bring it with you when the CB holds the next Meetup in February. This time around, he plans to give more notice and hopes to have it at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park.

Living Social and Groupon often have deals for Girardi’s which you can use at happy hour. Makes it even more affordable.

I hope I can make the Third Place Books meeting in Lake Forest Park.

    Thanks for all you do.
