Nelson, BC: Get Away to a Breathtaking Place You’ve Never Heard of

December 11, 2012

fbc01e21-8735-4bab-97fc-364e53812696-700_q60_-jpgThe Cheap Bastard is a man of many passions–food, travel, kitsch….and Nelson, BC. And yes, believe it or not, you have heard of it if you saw the Steve Martin movie “Roxanne.” It’s a beautiful Victorian town in the Southeastern corner of BC that sits along a glacier-fed Kootenay Lake amid the Selkirk Mountains. Not only is it a great ski area with Whitewater Ski Resort nearby, but it’s a beautiful place to escape to in the summer.

In fact, the only thing that keeps the CB from going there with his family every summer is the fact that it’s 500 miles away from Seattle as the crow drives. On the plus side, it’s only 3 hours north from Spokane so we could fly there and rent a car. And this Living Social deal for up to four nights at the Prestige Inn Nelson almost makes it worth it.

For just $189 ($317 value) we could stay in a lakeside hotel for two nights, get two passes to Ainsworth Hot Springs, a $50 dinner credit at Ric’s Lounge and Grill…and maybe even extend our stay for two more days by buying an additional voucher, which makes the long drive worthwhile. And that doesn’t even include all the other attractions including hiking, kayaking, loop drives, cultural institutions like the Touchstones Museum of Art and History and even a formal Japanese garden in an RV park.

As the CB sees it, the only drawback to the deal is that it ends too soon. It’s only good through for travel through Feb. 28, 2013, but if you like skiing, it’s well worth it to discover a place most Western Washingtonians have never heard of. You’ll be the first on your block to visit and you’ll want to go back again and again….

Limit 2 per customer, up to four additional as gifts. Up to two vouchers can be combined to extend a stay.

Savings to date: $21,051.
You’ve got to move quick, though. The chance to buy a voucher ends Dec. 11.
