Seattle Best Coffee Giveaway–Five Cheap Bastards Get $10 Coffee Cards

November 15, 2012

Cheap Bastard has a deep, dark secret. Ever since his brief stint as a tour guide for Savor Seattle, the CB has loved Seattle’s Best Coffee mochas. Sure, he started each tour at the Starbucks at Pike and First, but when he was running late or there was too long a line at Starbucks, he would duck into the Post Alley SBC and grab a mocha there.

As regular readers and cheap bastards know, the CB isn’t a big fan of just plain coffee, but he does enjoy a mocha. And this mocha has Starbucks beat hands down, which is odd considering that Starbucks owns SBC. He still loves Peet’s Freddos best when it comes to frappuccinos and he has enjoyed Stumptown Coffee mochas, but SBC has consistently been the best he’s found.

So, you can’t imagine how thrilled the CB was when he was invited to try SBC’s new drive-through location in South Seattle the day before it opened. Even better, they said he could try anything he wanted on the menu. There was just one catch, though. The CB told SBC that he couldn’t go unless he could take his 5 year-old son with him. He is a stay-at-home dad, after all.

It was so fun and exciting that he couldn’t sleep the night of the visit. Either that or it was because he had too much caffeine. Three medium coffee drinks will tend to do that to a person…

The new location is at 2990 4th Avenue and is right on the route many West Seattle commuters use as they head north into Downtown Seattle. And if you’re a budget shopper, it’s also located in the corridor between the Grocery Outlet and the South Seattle Costco. It’s noteworthy not only because it has a drive-through and an outdoor walkup counter, but also because it’s the first in a series of drive-throughs SBC plans to open throughout the country. In addition, its update menu features a wide range of new options and flavors including Birthday Cake Lattes, S’more Mochas and even Caramel Pretzel Lattes.

SBC’s new drink menu

Cheap bastards and the budget-oriented will find plenty to love because the new menu includes food combos with prices that remain the same no matter what size coffee you order. The combos include a breakfast sandwich and any size coffee for $3.49, a pretzel melt and coffee for $4.29, a pocket pie (the Chocolate Pecan Pie is great) and coffee for $2.99 and Oatmeal and coffee for $2.79.

And, for parents who are driving with kids, the drive through window is bigger and allows them to watch the barista preparing your drinks. This may not sound like much to adults who are scrambling to get to work, but trust the Cheap Bastard, it was compelling enough to keep his son engaged while a public relations person sat in the car with him explaining SBC’s new concept. And that’s a big deal considering that the CB’s son isn’t used to having people he doesn’t know in his car.

After much explanation and many questions, the CB and son ordered a chocolate pecan pie, a caramel apple pie, a feta and spinach pretzel melt, a spicy mac and cheese pie, a hot chocolate (for him), a frozen, blended birthday cake latte, a S’more Mocha and a Caramel Pretzel Latte. His son judged the chocolate pie and the hot chocolate “yummy” and the Cheap Bastard concurred. The CB also liked the pretzel melt and the spicy mac and cheese immensely.

A young satisfied customer samples his hot chocolate and pronounces it “yummy!”

The CB also enjoyed the beverages, but had different reactions to each one. His favorite was the S’more Mocha, but it still tasted like a mocha to him. Part of that of course is because he just didn’t have time to scoop up all the marshmallows and good stuff at the bottom when he was done. He also enjoyed the salt of the pretzel caramel latte, but was disturbed when soggy bits of pretzel clogged up the hole in his cup. Again, that was a result of his failure to follow prescribed procedure. Apparently, you’re really supposed to drink it quickly and scoop up the still crisp pretzels when you’re done. Unfortunately, the CB has been known to sip on a mocha for hours and by the time he was finished, they were soggy bits of dough. Again, that’s the CB’s own fault and he’s sure your results will vary in favor of both beverages.

The same is true of his reaction to the birthday cake drink. Although the CB loves cake batter, he has yet to find an cake batter flavored drink or ice cream that he likes. To him, it seems like something gets lost in the translation, but he’s not sure what. The SBC drink was nice and cold and sweet with vanilla syrup and white mocha sauce, but didn’t capture his imagination the way the S’More Mocha did.

Overall, though, he enjoyed everything he tried and would highly recommend SBC’s new concept. Although he isn’t usually big on buying pastries with his coffee, the CB is now reconsidering his stand thanks to the pretzel melt and the spicy mac and cheese pie. They were outstanding.

You don’t have to take the Cheap Bastard’s word for it, though. SBC has given the CB five $10 gift certificates to give away in a drawing early next week.

The entry process is painless. All you have to do is leave a comment telling the CB how you’ve used the blog or the book “The Cheap Bastard’s Guide to Seattle” to save money. Or say how much money you’ve saved using one particular post. Or, if you can’t do that, just say what item you would order when you go to SBC. The Gift Certificate is good at all SBC locations.

You can earn an additional entry by leaving a post on the Cheap Bastard facebook page.

Deadline for entries is Monday, Nov. 19th, right before the craziness that is Thanksgiving begins. The Cheap Bastard will randomly select five names at 9 pm Pacific time (or early Tuesday if he can’t stay up that late) and will notify the winners the following day. SBC will mail the gift certificates to the lucky folks who will have one additional thing to be thankful for this holiday season.

Since moving to Seattle, the CB (and his love of referring to himself in third person) has enriched the lives of me and my co-workers. My particular favorite posts have been JJ’s $1 sandwich day, Britt’s Pickles, and the countless free/cheap coffees to fuel my existence, like this post!

hubby enjoyed your Vet freebie list, and we would like to thank one and all :

    On 11/11
    – Dicks – wonderful burger and fries for lunch.
    – Little Caesars – great cheesy bread sticks. Aroma meant he also indulged in a pepperoni pizza.
    On 11/12
    – Red Robbin – excellent burger and fries for lunch.
    – California Pizza Kitchen – superb spinach and artichoke pizza for dinner.
    On 11/13
    – Duke’s Chowder House – heartwarming chowder for supper.

In each case, the graciousness of the host company and their staff went above and beyond. Their ‘…thank you for your service…’ was most appreciated, especially when those like my husband, remember well what it was like to come ‘home’ during/after Vietnam.

Again, we would like thank everyone who participated.

Of the list above, we were already customers at Dick’s, Duke’s and Red Robbin. And now we have two new pizza kitchens to add to our ‘go to’ places. Thank you.

As for SBC giveaway, we would probably try feta and spinach pretzel melt, and the spicy mac and cheese pie. And I would imagine the aroma would determine which coffee we would grab.
